How to travel safely with your pet
travel
Whether it’s running on the beach, soaking up the sun or playing fetch in an open field, making memories with your pet is truly a treasure. Traveling with them may be a territory filled with the unknown, but fear not, with these helpful tips you can make the travel experience both safe and comfortable for you and your pet.
Before we get into the tips, ensure that your pet is acclimatised to the car you’ll be travelling in. Start by going on shorter trips of 15 minutes and gradually increase the time so that they get used to being in a car.
Tips for travelling with a pet:
- Keep them secure
Ensure that your pet is secure in their carrier or crate. This allows them to remain safe in the car and not roam around, as well as it lessens the distractions for the driver.
- Back seat only
No pets on your lap or in the front seat, keep them safely in the back seat.
- Rest stops are a must
Take as many rest stops as possible to allow your pet to walk around and have bathroom breaks. Don’t forget to bring water bowls, waste bags and a leash.
- Bring someone with you
This means that while one person is driving the other can attend to the pet and you can swap roles.
- Get Pet Insurance
Cover all the bases by making sure that you have Pet Insurance, should your pet need medical attention you’ll rest assured knowing it’s all taken care of. We have three types of plans that you can choose from based on what is best suited to you (and your pet’s) needs.
- Stay on schedule
Try to stick to the same feed times while on the road, having a similar routine can help keep your pet comfortable.
- Don’t leave your pet unattended
Never leave your pet alone, even if you think you’ll only be away for 5 minutes. Your pet should always travel with a tag with its name on it and your cell phone number should something happen.
Now that the dos and don’ts are out the way, hope the holidays are filled with beautiful memories that will live in your heart forever.
