The world of work as we knew it has changed drastically in the last 2 years. Employees and employers have realised the importance of a work-life balance.

So much so that some companies will be piloting the 4-day work week, in February 2023. While most think that getting an extra day off per week, with no loss of pay, is a no-brainer, others feel that the rolling blackouts will cancel out the global movement’s promise of increased productivity.

What does a 4-day work week look like?

The 4-day work week is based on the 100-80-100™ model, meaning workers get 100% of the pay, for 80% of the time, in exchange for a commitment to maintaining at least 100% of the output.

Survey results

In a recent survey with 3500 participants, we found that:

  • 71% of the respondents were once again office bound.
  • 52% of respondents said their workplace did not offer a flexible working policy.
  • Over 60% thought the 4-day work week was an excellent idea.

When asked what the participants would do with the extra day:

  • 32% said they would spend more time with family.
  • 18% would use the time to study.
  • 16% would explore personal business endeavours.
  • 12% would rest and recharge.

Benefits of the 4-day work week

  • Increase productivity
  • Showcase innovative thinking
  • Huge drawcard as an employer
  • Staff retention
  • Differentiate against competitors

“The workplace of the future prioritises wellbeing, flexibility, and sustainability.  Whether that comes in the form of a 4-day work week, a hybrid policy, or a commute-worthy office environment, it’s the cornerstone of an attractive employee value proposition.” - Ricardo Coetzee, Head of Auto & General Insurance.

Whether you’re an employee or an employer it’s helpful to consider the new ways of work.

They offer flexibility and save time on long commutes, while also making room for social interactions and collaborative work.
